Medair is an international humanitarian organization established in 1988. Medair has been operating in Afghanistan since 1996 with programmes mainly in the Health, Water & Sanitation, and Livelihoods sectors with significant reconstruction activities in remote areas. Current projects are Water & Sanitation, Food Security, & Disaster Risk Reduction.

Medair Afghanistan is a complex and dynamic country programme due to instability related to politics and insecurity. Medair has been operating in Afghanistan since 1996, and is currently implementing multi-sectoral projects in nutrition, WASH and food security (including cash transfer programing) in vulnerable communities in the Central Highlands and Southern Afghanistan. Natural Resource Management and Emergency Response activities are also undertaken as required. All projects contribute to the overall objective of increased resilience.

Job Description:

Overall purpose:

To contribute actively to generating awareness and support for Medair’s work in Afghanistan, with a focus on both local and international audiences. The successful candidate will be a dynamic, passionate, and creative communicator with professional experience and skills in communications. S/he will be highly motivated, capable of managing an exciting and varied workload, and able operate in complex but fascinating contexts.

Given the high importance of private in addition to institutional funding, the role is essential in ensuring that Medair raises the financial support and awareness necessary to achieve its mission. 

Project overview:

The Afghanistan programme works across the country supporting vulnerable people with multi-sectoral relief programmes. The Communications Assistant will spend a significant amount of time in the field collecting stories, resources, photos, and working with the base teams in Daykundi, Uruzgan and Kandahar.


Communications and Fundraising Resources

  • Travel frequently to field sites to pro-actively and re-actively obtain and pitch resources including photography, interviews, and video etc.
  • Proactively engage in the monthly regional communications meetings, and the quarterly global editorial meeting, including pitching and collaborating with other Communications Officers from other country programmes.
  • Gather and prepare fundraising materials (e.g. gift handles, direct marketing resources, thank-you videos) in coordination with the Engagement Department at the Global Support Office (GSO) in Switzerland
  • Work closely with the Regional Communications Manager (RCM) to gather specific resources for GSO initiatives and projects, the year-end campaign, events, or fundraising pushes.
  • Provide in-country briefings to all staff about their role in communicating about the organisation and its work privately and to support the public communication and fundraising activities of Medair.
  • Act as the key Communications Focal Point for all communications enquiries about Afghanistan
  • Provide support to the Programme Funding Manager to deliver Private Funding proposals and reports to small institutional donors and foundations.



Media and Public Relations

  • Regularly monitor local press and events and in case of emergency situations, immediately inform the Regional Communications Manager.
  • Prepare, organise, and lead field visits of high-profile visitors, photographers, journalists, or media crews.

    Vocational Qualifications: 

    • Degree/professional qualification
    • Professional qualification in communications/fundraising/PR/media/marketing or a related field
    • Training or experience in multi-media production and editing

    Work Experiences

    • Experience in media, communications, advertising, marketing, or fundraising
