About Afghanaid:

Afghanaid is a British-registered international NGO, which has worked in Afghanistan for close to 40 years. Afghanaid assists community-driven processes that address the rights and fundamental needs of people in some of the most remote areas of Afghanistan, providing basic services, supporting development of rural livelihoods and responding to humanitarian emergencies. We target the households at greatest risk of exclusion, including those headed by women, or with elderly, chronically ill or disabled family members. Together, we find solutions to their problems. Our work gives ordinary Afghans a voice in their own development, making them active participants in shaping their lives and their communities. We continue to pay particular attention to advancing the roles that women and girls play in society. We recognise their role as agents of change in promoting the wellbeing of, and opportunities for, themselves and their families.

In the second half of 2021 we have ramped up our emergency humanitarian assistance work in response to the compounding issues of drought and the escalation in conflict, and the subsequent economic crisis and rise in food insecurity.

Job Description:

Purpose of the consultancy

Afghanaid is seeking the services of a professional photographer and videographer to collect high quality photos, written case studies and film clips from Afghanaid’s emergency humanitarian assistance projects in Samangan and Badakhshan provinces. The primary audience for this content will be donors and supporters and they will be used both online and in print.

Objectives

The objective of this consultancy is to:

  1. Document Afghanaid’s emergency humanitarian assistance work
  2. Provide content to report back to donors on the use of their funds

Deliverables

1. The consultant must collect case studies including first person quotes from at least 3 women and at least 3 men who we have worked with.

These case studies should include a variety of photographs, in both portrait and landscape orientation, and adhere to Afghanaid’s branding. In particular, we do not ever share images of people which lack dignity, or show their suffering. Having said that, we know that for this particular topic, the tone is likely to be more subdued than our regular content.

The photos should include 5-10 images of the individual, their family, their home, any photos which help put their story into context, and any of the interventions we have implemented with them ‘in action’. Eg. if we have provided a cooking kit, please take photos of them using this kit.

2. The consultant must collect footage of at least 1 man and at least 1 woman talking about the impact the humanitarian intervention has had on their lives and that of their families.

Job Requirements:

Essential

The consultant should:

  • be female, so that they can comfortably interview women;
  • be familiar with Afghan culture and have experience in working in similar contexts if not Afghanistan;
  • have experience interviewing and writing up stories and case studies in fluent English;
  • be ready and willing to adapt to local dress codes and adhere to Afghanaid’s security protocols;
  • have a portfolio that includes the styles of work that would fit with Afghanaid’s brand guidelines, and includes stills and film;
  • be in the country and able to travel to Samangan and Badakhshan in January 2022.

Desirable

The consultant might:

  • have access to a drone and know how to use it;
  • be able to narrate videos;
  • be able to speak Dari/Pashto and therefore would not need a translator to accompany them.

Who we are?

Afghanistan has one of the slowest internet speeds in the world. Broadband connection is not available in everywhere and mobile data as a most used way to connect to the world is very expensive. Job search portals are very heavy and takes lots of time to load; therefore making it very hard and time-consuming for job seekers to find their dream job. To address this problem we launched Afghanistan's first speed optimized job search portal, with at least 15 times faster load time and maximum 200 kbs page size.
