Prosthetics and Orthotics-Technician (Re Announced in Kandahar

About Handicap International:

HI has been supporting the Afghan people since 1987, starting its operations in Pakistan. Since 1996, HI has been operating across Afghanistan in order to launch victim assistance interventions, working at different levels of the society and adopting a cross-sectoral approach. While present on the ground to directly support victims of the conflict through the provision of a range of services – from physical rehabilitation, to mine risk education and inclusive livelihoods – HI has been continuously advocating to increase the rights of victims and other people with disabilities in the country. In particular, and in line with its global strategy and priorities, HI has been advocating to reduce the use of landmines and conventional weapons. Acknowledging the need to respond to the urgent emergency crises combined with longer term, chronic gaps in the provision of services, HI has steadily expanded its range of activities and services in order to support the most vulnerable people, enhancing their resilience while strengthening participation and inclusion of all individuals.

Job Description:

Reporting to the Project Manager with close working with other project staff based in Spin Boldak district. S/he is responsible for contributing to the implementation of the INTPA- funded project (which is a multi-year project) in Spin Boldak, Kandahar.

The Mobile P&O workshop Technician of Prosthetics and Orthotics works within the overall structure of Handicap International (HI), he/she is bound by the Terms and conditions of engagement for national staff and by the Internal Regulation.

 

1. Responsibilities as a Technician:

 

1. To visit the targeted communities and provide P&O services at community level
2. Support the Social Workers in the provision of sensitization sessions at a community level on P&O services, the importance of early detection, and disability and inclusion
3. To carry out assess/check the patients’ devices
4. To take measurement for all types mobility aids devices and maintain effective communication with all patients regardless of disability or gender respecting the privacy.
5. To delivered mobility aids device and if required to adjust it according to the patient need
6. To make small splints for patients from local materials (from low temperature thermoplastic /plastic pipe) and if possible to make small modification in shoes of patients.
7. To be able to refer and guide the patients/ caregivers if the appliance require new devices or major repair and changes
8. Follow and respect policies and procedures of workshop laid down by the management.
9. To keep close coordination with PT and take part in client consultation with PT in the selection of mobility aids devise for clients if needed
10. To identify patients’ devices which needs repair and to do it’s repair as possible   
11. To follow the schedule and respect repairing timing
12. To check the maintenance and ensure the good use of the appliances Through users
13. To keep accurate record of the, repair, remaining, delivery and use of raw materials
14. When required help the project manager for preparation of the monthly report about the activities, problems, solutions etc.
15. To help the project manager and make weekly order for raw materials from the stock  
16. To write down technical cards for mobility aids in patient consultation when required
17. Ensure the training, evaluation and follow up of the person with the appliance, by performing the necessary technical checks, initial standing and gait training, providing information about the use, maintenance, repair and the replacement times of appliance. Involving the caregivers and patient family in the treatment process.
18. To follow maintain instructions of machines, tools
19. To help the counterparts when he/she is busy
20. To respect and follow Technical Unit advice
21. To inform project manager at least one week before if he wants to take annual leave

 

2. Responsibilities as a trainee:

1. To participate in any internal and external trainings required and requested by the technical unit and project manager
2. To support the project manager on procurement plan and purchasing the raw materials

   Job Requirements:

   Knowledge required

   Essential

   • Minimum 6-years’ experience in prosthetics/orthotics production.
   • Have received on the job training

   Desirable:

   •  Have Cat 2 diploma
   • Minimum 3-years’ experience in prosthetics/orthotics production
   • Experience working in a PRC, Mobile P&O, or other integrated care setting is preferrable

   Skills required

   Essential
